#CIPDCoach14 – Coaching is not a soft option

That first session was so inspiring – exactly why I started my own business to make coaching cultures a reality for more people and more businesses!! Brilliant!!

Now we’re hearing from Frank Dick of Coach 2 Coach about why coaching isn’t a soft option. He’s going to talk about moving GROW to GROWL by adding ‘Learning’ at the end. Hmmm will be interesting to see where this goes….

He says there are two types of people in competition – Those who choose to be valley people and those who choose to be mountain people.

In the valleys they’re the ‘should’ve’, ‘could’ve’, ‘would’ve’. They’re happy with a draw to avoid losing.

Mountain people choose to take risks – although they don’t see it as risk – they go to somewhere new and when they see the view they go a bit further. They believe on living at the edge. They’re winners and know that they are.

When you realise you can change your attitude from the valleys to the mountains you realise you have the ability to change or do anything.

Wherever we go in life, whatever we do, there is uncertainty everywhere – we just need to turn it to our advantage.

If we belong to creating enduring excellence for an organisation it’s a sustainable model – and that comes through each individual creating their own excellence through being coached.

We can be taught stuff, tools, skills – but we learn the art of these things by bringing them through experience in real life. Experience means being tested before you’ve learnt the lesson. Coaching helps you push your boundaries to test you before you go out to the experience.

Competitive advantage will come through making decisions better and faster. By being prepared to learn together you’ll discover the ability to make decisions better and faster, and put yourself in the best place for gaining competitive advantage.

Being prepared to learn means combining PROCESS (how often will you get together to learn, how will you make that possible) and ATTITUDE. These 2 lead to PERFORMANCE and LEARNING. Whether you get the results depends on your competition, the environment you’re in, the weather that day – so you might not be able to control that but you can most definitely control all the other aspects. It means you need to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBIITY. You need to DECIDE to take considered risks in decision making. It means you need to JUST DO IT brilliantly and excellently.

So when developing strategies, control the controllables, recognise the marginal gains (they all add up, one step at a time), error elimination (interesting when there’s also the approach of fail fast & iterate), keep an agile mindset – then you can leverage the uncertain.

Remember you don’t have to be sick to get better – when you hear coaching do you think it means there’s something wrong? It’s not about that. The top performers are the ones who get coached.

Frank thinks of coaching like being a parent – you do what you can to give them the skills and confidence to go forward with their life and then you have to let them go to take their own risks, do their own things, find their own way, be responsible for their own performance. As a coach you can’t hold your clients with you when forever it’s really time to let them go – to help them you need to let them go. Your role isn’t to rescue your client – it’s to grow them as a capable adult who can think better for themselves than anyone else.

As coaches if you’re not being coached yourself and being challenged to your edge then you’re not learning and you’re not in control of your best performance. How then can you help your clients achieve their’s?

Frank’s shown Hussain Bolt’s 200m world record and talking about focussing on your own performance. Don’t concern yourself with the performance of others. When you’re running your race do you look to others and think you’re coming last? Or do you look to where you were yesterday and see how you’ve improved today? Focus on the positive.

In amongst this Frank’s been talking about GROWL and is onto the L for learning – what controls / monitoring do you use to learn faster? What is your debrief process? What will you do for your ongoing development?

If you ask your clients questions and get back the answers you expected, how much are you in a challenging coaching relationship. Yes – celebrate your client’s achievements. Yes – support their endeavour and enterprise. But YES – challenge their underperformance. If you don’t, that moment to help them move forward is gone forever.

And to close the session….
You are unique. Nobody else can be you. If you choose not to bring yourself to the world then the world will be a lesser place. PAY IT FORWARD.
