Childhood Truths

So does this ring any bells from childhood?

Child 1 – “You’re a big smelly poo”

Child 2 – [say this part in a sing-song ‘nah nah nah nah’ child’s voice for maximum effect] “What you say is what you are”

Child 1 – Urgh no fair!

But it occurred to me the kids are actually onto the truth here!  [Note my use of ‘the’ kids – you really have no evidence that it was my own kids having this high brow discussion during a boring, rainy half term!] read more

After a full on day in Sheffield yesterday at the CIPD HR in SMEs event, I’ve been pondering and reflecting.

Coaching at Work

Final session for me at the L&D Show with David Clutterbuck. Which coaching techniques help improve business performance.

Not easy to put financial numbers against benefits but it’s seen that colleagues who experience more coaching and mentoring –
– feel more engaged
– will stay with their employer longer (a third more people stay)
– understand how what they do fits with the strategy and the difference they can make
– knowledge is transferred and retained better within teams
– organisational reputation because there are open conversations about whats going on read more

Literally Headless

I read a great story by Doug Shaw yesterday (http://stopdoingdumbthingstocustomers.com/communication/what-did-you-do-before/) which really resonated with me.

The last few weeks have been really busy. Preparing to handover my old job, getting ready for new life, attending a couple of fantastic coaching courses, organising the kids’ birthday parties, the usual household stuff, oh, and the draw of the phone, as Doug so poignantly wrote about, constantly there with the many channels and so much great content to read! read more

Did you hear the one about……

This will come as a surprise but during the festive season we had a day where we ate lots of food at someone’s house!!  How off the wall are we!!

Anyway, as you’d expect, the prerequisite ‘lots of food’ had been bought and prepared by the host and, although we chipped in with some final bits of cooking / stirring / opening packets(!), the host had far and away done the lion’s share of the work. read more

How many roots have you uncovered recently?

I was listening to the radio on my way home the other night and heard about a great new approach to dealing with low to mid risk domestic violence offenders.  Rather than sending these people off to prison for a few months, the social work team had devised an 18 week programme for these people to be part of.  The purpose of the programme was to change behaviour, and help people manage their anger, essentially through a coaching approach.  I struggled with some of it, e.g. “imagine what you don’t want your child to say about you when they’re 18″ – rather than focussing on the positive and pre-supposing success.  But overall it sounded like an amazing approach and seemed to be working (only 3 re-offenders out of about 70 participants so far – far less than people who get put away). read more
