#cipdmap16 : Curation of the blogs

Last Saturday, 8th October, saw the third CIPD Midlands Area Partnership event.  Jon Bartlett and I were the blogsquad for the day and thankfully lots of other people were on the # too.  It’s been great to see the numbers of people grow on Twitter at events like these, and there were some good debates happening, as well as straight sharing of content or appreciation of what was being spoken about. read more

#cipdmap16 – Getting under the surface of workplace behaviour

Karen Meager of Monkey Puzzle is speaking about work and leadership. In business we see ‘unhelpful behaviours; and in work we try and address them, often through instruction / process / policy, by changing behaviour. Karen helps business see what’s behind the behavioural ‘issues’ so she’ll be showing us some of these things, some of the science about why and how you can do something about that. And talking about how to know better when you’ve done enough. read more

The MAP is Back!

One month today on 8th October, the CIPD MAP team are back for another of their fantastic annual conferences and I’m very much looking forward to being one half of their resident blogsquad with Jon Bartlett (#CIPDMAP16).

The theme this year is “Building Workplaces for the Future”.

When I read this, I don’t see the theme as – come along and learn some things that you’ll need to apply in the next 3 to 5 years. Not even the next 2 years. This theme says to me – come along to learn the things you need to do now if you want to even have a workplace in the future! read more

#CIPDNAP16 : Join me for a walk

Last week at the CIPD Learning & Development Show I attended one of the free exhibition sessions with David Pearl of Street Wisdom.

Street Wisdom is an amazing way of using your surroundings to help you answer a question you hold. Getting out into the streets either somewhere you know, or somewhere new, looking up, paying attention, and seeing what thoughts appear from what your attention is drawn to. read more

#cipdldshow : What I heard and what I think

After a full 2 days in London, I’m starting to process and reflect on what I’ve heard.  And this isn’t even half of what was going on there!!  So, here’s where I am.  What do you think?  What else did you hear?

Start with the business. Know your business.  Know the strategy. read more

#cipdldshow: From learner control to learner choice

This sessions is with Anne Parker of Booking.com and Peter Kay (no not that one) from Tarmac.

Context being set about choice with a controlled environment – freedom in a framework.

When we have so many coffee shops to choose from it doesn’t drive loyalty and there’s little control for the coffee merchants to get customers to them. Having someone to guide you to a great one or advertising a certain shop will help bring an element of guidance or control to people’s choices. read more

#cipdldshow: Influencing Business Leaders to Enbrace the Modern Learning Agenda

Session 2 of #cipdldshow with Tim Hallatt, L&D Business Partner of ATS Euromaster, James Mitchell, Snr Director of Global Talent Develoment of Rackspace and Warren Howlett of the CIPD is hosting.

Going for thought provoking and practical in this session with space for joint Q&A at the end.

First of all it’s Tim and context around ATS Euromaster. UK arm of a European business, Europe’s largest tyre repair company with about 30k people in 18 countries in Europe. Owned by the Michelin group which provides internal challenges because a retail & distribution org owned by a manufacturing org & the two people processes don’t always match. Operate in both B2C and B2B markets from wheelbarrows up to quarry machinery. 7 people in the L&D team. Challenge of 340 sites, 3-16 people in each location, presents a challenge of geographical spread rather than volume of employees. read more

#cipdldshow – How comfy are you?

Next week sees the CIPD Learning & Development Show coming to The Olympia in London!  I’m fortunate to be on the Blog Squad again, alongside bloggers old and new, so I hope you’ll find what we share interesting, thought provoking with maybe a few giggles in there too.

CIPDLDShow16

Already, Jo, Ian and Jonathan have written some great pre-event pieces.  I’ve been meaning to write for a while and was wondering what might be most useful to share.  Then this weekend, inspiration came in the form of this TED Talk via a good colleague Garry Turner. read more

#CIPDMAP15 My Beautiful Career

My second seminar choice is My Beautiful Career – messing around with narratives of our careers with Prof John Arnold of the School of Business and Economics at Loughborough Uni.  With a surprising foray into standup comedy!

How do we tell the story or our career? How could we tell it differently or better?  To both ourselves and to others.  Do we have different versions for different audiences?  And how might we tell it instead? read more
