I started writing a post on feedback the other week because it’s something that comes back again and again as something we all struggle to do. Even if we’re giving feedback about how great something’s been we can still feel awkward and not deliver it well – is that a British thing? And then there’s the feedback when we’ve spotted something that, if changed, could help someone improve in some way. The supposed ‘negative’ feedback.
In a crisis we come together.
While standing on the train station this morning, waiting for the fast train to London with all the regular commuters, the silence was deafening. Everybody was so separate. So isolated. So absorbed in their own world.
It felt desperately alien to me and I wanted to talk to someone – anyone – to create some human connection.

Now, a year on, I’m incredibly proud to have lots of amazing, forward-thinking tweeps as friends, colleagues, mentors and challengers and I was fortunate to go to CIPD14 as part of the blog squad.
The final session of CIPD14 is the keynote from Adam Grant about the world from the perspective of give and take. He says that some people take, some match and some give without any expectation of return. Here’s more of what he says….
Adam’s an Organisational Psychologist and is often asked to go in after members of exec have been fired. He notices the paranoia in these places where people are convinced that someone is out to get them.
I was really gutted I missed out on the Sheffield Street Wisdom a few weeks back so I was delighted that David D’Souza was bringing it to #CIPD14.

I believe in mindfulness, I know the power of our subconscious mind and I even know the difference a good walk can make to my own creativity and problem solving.

My kids are going to be part of a flu immunisation trial in Leicestershire. We got the forms home, I filled them in, ticked yes for them to be in the trial, and sent them back. It made me think…..what if we lived in a country where we couldn’t trust our health provider. How much extra work would it have taken for me to decide whether this was a good idea or not? I’d have thoroughly read the information leaflet. I’d have been talking to my doctor friends and family. I’d have been searching online. And then I’d have been doing the form-filling and box-ticking.
